A full bodied blend of black tea with rich aromatic Indian spices that are invigorating for the mind and body. Perfect to wrap your hands around on a chilly afternoon. Masala chai has been cherished for centuries in India for it’s rich antioxidants properties, helps aid digestion and improves circulation.

Masala chai ingredients: *Ceylon black tea (Camellia sinensis), *Cardamom pods (Elettaria cardamomum), *Ginger (Zingiber officinale), *Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum), *Black peppercorns (Piper nigrum), *Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia), *Turmeric (Curcuma longa), *Star anise (Illicium verum)

Small – loose leaf tea – 42 grams / approx. 15 servings
Regular – loose leaf tea -125 grams / approx. 45 servings

Add 2 tsp of chai in a moral and pestle and crush the spices to the release flavour. Transfer the crushed spices to a small saucepan, add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of milk. Bring the tea to a slow simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, cover and let steep for 2-3 minutes. Add sugar or honey to taste. Strain into a mug. Chai can also be enjoyed over ice.

Tip – I encourage you to experiment with the quantity of tea and the length of the steep time to find your desired strength. Water that is too hot will over-extract the bitter components of tea, while water that is too cool might not fully draw out the flavour of chai tea. Enjoy experimenting.






Masala chai

Ceylon black tea – rich in antioxidants, boosting immunity and heart health. Ceylon tea contains caffeine to increase mental alertness throughout the day but with only half to a third of the amount of caffeine compared to a cup of coffee.

Cardamom pods – used to aid digestion including heartburn, intestinal spasms, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and loss of appetite.

Ginger – increases saliva and other digestive fluids, relieving indigestion and aiding digestion. Recommend for treating nausea and morning sickness. The anti-inflammatory properties help relieve swelling and pain.

Cloves –  help improve digestion by stimulating the secretion of digestive enzymes. Cloves also  and acts as an expectorant, making it easier to cough up phlegm.

Black peppercorns – increases hydrochloric acid secretion in the stomach, thereby aiding digestion. Pepper also help in the absorption of turmeric.

Cinnamon – renowned for its antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Cinnamon is used in Western herbal medicine for its ability to lower blood sugar by improving insulin resistance.

Turmeric – curcumin is the compound in turmeric that has potent anti-inflammatory property and antioxidant properties. Research shows that inflammation is a contributor to many diseases such as heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

Star anise – rich in antioxidants which help fight free radicals. Anise also helps improve digestion, alleviate cramps and reduce nausea. Consuming star anise tea after meals helps treat digestive ailments such as bloating, gas, indigestion and constipation.
